‘Project Marathwada’ portrays the plight of Indian farmers

TIL Desk Bollywood/The drought-like situation across Maharashtra has prompted several farmers to commit suicide. Veteran actor Om Puri portrays the plight of one such man who contemplates ending his life in the film, ‘Project Marathwada’. He plays the character of Tukaram, a distressed peasant, whose son commits suicide. He is in a hapless situation as he conducts his son’s last rites. The film highlights his grave loss and the helplessness of people living in his village. How Puri decides to end his life, after futile attempts to seek help from the corrupt system, forms the twist in the tale.

Puri says, “It’s moving to see how we have abandoned our farmers, yet they continue to feed us. While playing the character, it was heart wrenching to see their miserable condition. We hope to create a strong wave through this film, which is the best medium to reach out to the larger audience and highlight their crisis.”

The movie, which is written and directed by Bhavin Wadia also features Seema Biswas, Govind Namdeo, Dalip Tahil, Farrah Kedar, Caroll, Kunal Seth and Rahul Patel. While Archit Patel is the cinematographer, Sanjoy Chowdhury has composed the background music.  Project Marathwada’, produced by Prakash Patel, Jigna Patel, Jay Prakash Patel and Eagle Eye Entertainment, releases today.
