At ICJ, Indian judge Dalveer Bhandari votes against Russia

TIL Desk/National/New Delhi/ Russia-Ukraine war worries the whole world. The issue of Russia’s military action in Ukraine has been raised in many international forums. The matter also reached the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where this international court has asked Russia to immediately stop its military action in Ukraine.

The ICJ passed this order by a vote of 13 to two, that is, 13 countries were in favor that Russia should immediately stop its military action in Ukraine, while two countries voted against it. The special thing is that in this Indian Judge Justice Dalveer Bhandari also went against Russia and voted in favor of majority on the basis of his views.

At the same time, the two judges who voted against the proposal brought against Russia’s military action in Ukraine include Justice Kirill Gevorgian (Russia) and Justice Sue Hankin (China). Ukraine has welcomed the ICJ’s decision and termed it as its victory, while the US has called it an important decision and asked Russia to immediately stop its military action in Ukraine. Ukraine had appealed to the ICJ two weeks ago to intervene in the matter.

This order of the ICJ came on Wednesday, in which it was clearly stated that Russia should immediately stop the military action that took place in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Many countries including America have welcomed this decision of ICJ and termed it as important. The most important stand in this was that of Indian judge Dalveer Bhandari in the ICJ, who voted against Russia’s military action in Ukraine.

While his stand is in line with the majority decision of the ICJ, it is completely different from the stand of the Government of India, which has so far avoided a vote against Russia at any forum in the United Nations. But a neutral stance has been adopted.
