TIL Desk Bollywood/ In the increasingly intolerant country that India has become, an advertisement of a jewellery brand, Malabar Gold, has come under flak. The ad shows Kareena Kapoor Khan resplendent in jewellery. The ad is being released ahead of the Hindu festival of Akshay Tritiya on May 3.
The fact that Kareena is not wearing a bindi, has raised the ire of people asking for a boycott of the brand and the actress. Several tweets point out that the owner of Malabar Gold is a Muslim and Kareena has married into a Muslim family.
This tweet from @AcSamarth says, “Every Hindu woman puts kumkum or bindi on her forehead as the foremost adornment be it a festival or even in everyday life. But the said advertisement features @Kareena_Kapoor
without a bindi. This is an insult to the Hindu religion
#No_Bindi_No_Business
#Boycott_MalabarGold.”
During Diwali, clothing and furnishing brand Fabindia removed a tweet promoting its Diwali collection after social media users, including Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, objected to the use of an Urdu phrase to describe the festival.
