TIL Desk Lucknow:ЁЯСЙ Lieutenant General Sanjay Mitra, AVSM assumed the appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Surya Command, Indian Army in Lucknow on 1 October, 2026.
On assuming command, the Army Commander paid solemn homage to the Bravehearts at Smritika War Memorial, Lucknow, honouring their courage and supreme sacrifice. He thereafter reviewed the Guard of Honour in a solemn ceremonial parade, marking the commencement of his tenure at the helm of Surya Command.
He reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of operational readiness, enhancing strategic responsiveness and strengthening multi-domain capabilities across the theatre.
The Army Commander extended his greetings and best wishes to all ranks, Veer Naris, Veterans, Defence Civilian Employees and families of Surya Command, recognising their steadfast contribution to the Command’s strength and spirit. He reaffirmed his commitment to their welfare, morale, professional growth and continued pursuit of excellence.
Lt. Gen. Sanjay Mitra was commissioned into the Grenadiers on 10 June 1989 from the Indian Military Academy. In a career spanning over three decades, he has held numerous command and staff appointments. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion, an Infantry Brigade and an Infantry Division in Northern Jammu and Kashmir and in Eastern Ladakh. He also served a tenure as instructor at Commando School Belgaum and Chief Instructor (Army) at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He also served as a Squadron Commander in National Security Guard and a Colonel General Staff in Faculty of Studies, Army War College.
After getting promoted to the rank of Lieutenant general, on 9 June 2023 he took over as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Corps and relinquished this command on 17 June 2025. He then moved to the Army headquarters as Director General of Operational Logistics & Strategic Movement.
