* Khushboo’s study explores how globalisation has transformed India’s traditional yoga practices into a global wellness and tourism experience
TIL Desk Lucknow:ЁЯСЙ The growing global popularity of yoga is not merely driving a wellness trend but is also emerging as a significant sociological phenomenon, according to a study on wellness tourism in India by Khushboo, who was awarded a PhD degree at the convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) on Saturday.
Her research examines wellness tourism in India and its impact on society, with a particular focus on the transformation of yoga from a culturally rooted Indian philosophical and spiritual tradition into a global wellness product and tourism experience.
The study observes that the growth of yoga-based wellness tourism has been influenced by global mobility, consumer culture, changing health consciousness, evolving lifestyles and digital media. It also reflects the growing search for mental well-being, meaning and healthier lifestyles amid the stresses of modern life.
Khushboo undertook extensive fieldwork across different parts of India as part of her research. Since wellness tourism remains a relatively emerging area of academic study, with limited literature specifically addressing its social dimensions, she travelled to various parts of the country to understand the sector at the grassroots level.
During her field visits, she interacted with people associated with wellness tourism and studied their experiences, practices and the impact of the sector on local communities. These observations, combined with extensive academic research, formed the foundation of her doctoral study.
Her research concludes that yoga-based wellness tourism cannot be viewed simply as a leisure or recreational activity. Instead, it represents a complex social phenomenon shaped by changing patterns of travel, consumption, health awareness and individual lifestyles.
Khushboo’s academic journey has also been closely linked with Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University. She completed her MPhil in Sociology from the university and was awarded a Gold Medal for her academic performance. She holds postgraduate degrees in Sociology and Tourism Management and has qualified the UGC-NET in Sociology.
She is currently working as an Assistant Professor at SRM University.
On receiving her doctoral degree, Khushboo expressed gratitude to her research guide, teachers and the university for their guidance and support. She also credited her family for their constant encouragement throughout her academic journey.
She dedicated her PhD to her parents, saying their faith, support and blessings remained her greatest source of strength.
