Singing reality shows can’t guarantee work : Shaan

TIL Desk Bollywood/ Renowned playback singer Shaan, currently seen judging a singing competition show, feels such series only give instant fame, not long-term success. “The singing reality shows gives gratification beyond that a show can’t guarantee work. There have been some contestants who have made it big while some haven’t. I think one shouldn’t get carried away with the popularity and rather focus on their work,” Shaan told. The 43-year-old “Tanha Dil” hitmaker has been roped in as one of the coaches for “The Voice India Kids”, an adaptation of the internationally acclaimed singing reality show “The Voice”.

Besides him, singers Shekar Ravjiani and Neeti Mohan are also part of the show, which is aired on &TV channel. Talking about the series, Shaan said, “It’s a competition but with kids. The kids on the show are very talented and confident.”  The singer said is careful while giving his views to children on the show. “We coaches make sure we are not harsh and at the same time not too sweet while expressing our views on their performance. It’s not difficult so far to judge them as they have been sporting.”

Shaan believes the fiction shows need to undergo sea of change as he feels they are regressive and do not dwell on real issues of the society. “Television is a strong medium as it reaches millions of people but the shows on small screen are regressive. There are few shows that deal with real issues while some deal with redundant issues.

“We are living in an educative developing country like India and it’s sad that people are talking about ‘naagin’, old beliefs etc. We need to show how progressive India is on screen. Also the saas-bahu serials show how bad a mother- in-law can be? Why not show good, positive side as well?,” he said. According to the 43-year-old “Behti Hawa Sa” hitmaker, it’s unfortunate that serials showing India in a poor light are getting TRPs.
“It is sad that such shows are getting TRP. I think earlier there were some really path breaking shows like ‘Buniyaad’, ‘Hum Log’, etc. In our show, ‘The Voice India Kids’, we are not harping on emotions for TRPs,” he added.
