TIL Desk/National/New Delhi/ The counting process for polls to Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is underway. A total of 270 seats are up for grabs. The election to two wards was postponed due to death of candidates. The MCD polls are being seen as a test of the popularity of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ability to score a hat-trick in the local body and Congress’s efforts to revive itself in the metropolis.
While the BJP, AAP, and the Congress are major players, Swaraj India, a party floated by former AAP leaders, made its debut in the MCD polls 2017. Other parties in the fray include Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the Janata Dal-United, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Shiv Sena.
The Delhi State Election Commission has set up 35 centres for counting of votes and the results are expected by afternoon.
A total of 2,537 candidates are in the fray for North Delhi Municipal Corporation (103 seats) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 seats), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (63 seats).
