TIL Desk Goa:
With Artificial Intelligence (AI) and rapidly evolving technologies transforming industries and employment patterns across the globe, universities must move beyond preparing students solely for their first jobs. Instead, they should equip them with the ability to learn continuously, adapt to changing circumstances, and successfully navigate multiple career transitions throughout their lives. These views were expressed by speakers during an Open House event organized by WPU Goa on Saturday.
The event brought together prospective students, parents, and educators to discuss the future of higher education, the challenges of an increasingly unpredictable world, and the evolving expectations from universities. A key focus of the discussion was WPU Goa’s transdisciplinary education model, which encourages students to develop expertise across multiple fields rather than remaining confined to a single discipline.
Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Walter Leal said that the university is being built on an academic philosophy that encourages both students and faculty members to think beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. He noted that the institution places strong emphasis on practical experience, industry engagement, global perspectives, and self-directed learning alongside academic study. According to him, the ability to keep learning throughout life and adapt to changing situations has become essential for students in today’s world.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ashish Bhardwaj said that the future will not belong only to specialists, but also to individuals who can integrate knowledge from different disciplines to solve emerging challenges. He emphasized that higher education institutions must prepare students for opportunities and transitions that cannot yet be predicted.
During the discussion, speakers highlighted curiosity, adaptability, collaborative thinking, and a commitment to lifelong learning as some of the most important competencies for future careers. WPU Goa currently offers programmes including B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Bachelor of Management Studies (Honours), B.Des. in Integrated Product Design and Communication Design, and B.Sc. (Honours) in Psychology.
The event also underscored that the purpose of higher education should extend beyond employability, focusing instead on empowering students to thrive amid uncertainty and successfully respond to the challenges of a rapidly changing future.
