TIL Desk/National/New Delhi/ Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that criticism against the government for deporting the Rohingya living in the country was uncalled for as the Myanmar government itself was willing to take its citizens back.
On India’s decision to deport Rohingya, Rajnath said, “Rohingya are not refugees, nor have they taken asylum. They are illegal immigrants.”
The UN says more than 420,000 Rohingya have fled for safety to Bangladesh in the face of an army campaign that includes the burning of villages and rape.
Earlier this month, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has stated it categorically that the government is looking for ways to deport over 40,000 Rohingyas living in the country illegally.
Rajnath Singh was referring to Myanmar Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s remarks that they will soon establish a process to review those who seek to enter the country again.
