TIL Desk Lucknow:
An incident involving assault and abusive behavior against Suez sanitation workers has come to light during sewer cleaning operations in the Kanhaiya Madhavpur II (Adarsh Nagar) area, falling under Zone-6. It is reported that the Suez team had arrived in the area to carry out sewer cleaning work based on a complaint registered via their toll-free helpline number.
While the work was in progress, Aman—a local resident of the area—demanded that the team immediately clean the sewer at his premises as well, despite not having registered a formal complaint. When the Suez employees requested that he follow protocol by registering a complaint first—assuring him that the work would be carried out as soon as the complaint was logged—Aman and his associates became enraged.
It is alleged that they began physically assaulting the sanitation workers, Ravi Kumar and Shivlal, while hurling verbal abuses at them. Furthermore, the employees were shoved around, their clothes were torn, and they were subjected to threats and caste-based slurs. When the workers attempted to resist, other members of the household also rushed to the scene and joined in the abusive behavior and physical assault against the sanitation workers.
Following the incident, the affected sanitation workers submitted a written complaint to the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Thakurganj Police Station (Lucknow district), demanding strict legal action against the accused individuals. The employees stated that they work daily under arduous conditions to ensure the smooth functioning of the city’s sewer system, but such incidents severely demoralize them.
The sanitation workers have appealed to the administration to initiate stringent punitive action against such unruly elements to ensure the safety and security of employees working in the field in the future.
