Doctors at Max Hospital, Lucknow Saves Life of Woman with Dislodged Heart Device and Ruptured Heart Tissue in Rare Emergency Open-Heart Surgery

TIL Desk Lucknow:👉In a dramatic life-saving intervention, doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow successfully performed an emergency open-heart surgery on 46-year-old Nazma Bano from Fatehpur, who was brought to the hospital in the early hours of May 30 with a dislodged heart device, ruptured heart tissue, and no measurable blood pressure.

Ms. Bano, who had been living with an undiagnosed congenital heart defect—Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a hole in the wall separating the heart’s two upper chambers—underwent a device closure procedure in Prayagraj on May 29. However, the implanted device became dislodged and lodged dangerously close to a heart valve. An unsuccessful retrieval attempt at the hospital caused a tear in the left atrial appendage, leading to massive fluid accumulation around her heart and rapid deterioration of cardiac function.

With no surgical facility available locally and time running out, the treating team reached out to Dr. Vishal Srivastava, Associate Director, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at Max Hospital, Lucknow. He immediately advised a temporary drainage procedure and autologous blood reinfusion to stabilise the patient enough for transfer.

Dr. Vishal Srivastava, Associate Director, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at Max Hospital, Lucknow, said, “When Nazma arrived at our emergency around 3:30 am, she was conscious but in profound shock—her blood pressure was unrecordable. Within moments, she went into cardiac arrest. Our team sprang into action with CPR, but there was no response “Given her critical condition, both the Emergency Department and Cardiac Surgery teams were prepared for immediate response upon her arrival at Max Hospital’s Emergency Department. The patient was swiftly transferred to the Cardiac Operating Theatre, where, with CPR ongoing, a sternotomy was performed to facilitate direct cardiac massage and initiate definitive life‑support interventions.”

Recognising that there was no time to lose, Dr. Srivastava and his team moved forward with emergency open-heart surgery. The procedure involved the careful removal of the dislodged device, repair of the tear in the left atrial appendage, and closure of the original heart defect.

Dr. Srivasatava, further added, “The surgery lasted nearly four hours. Nazma was shifted to the ICU and monitored closely. Her recovery over the next few days was remarkable. She was discharged in stable condition just a week later and is now back to living a healthy, normal life.”

This extraordinary case highlights the importance of timely surgical intervention and the availability of advanced cardiac care facilities, especially in emergencies. It also showcases Max Hospital’s commitment to providing expert, lifesaving care around the clock.
