  • This pilot has empowered 60+ teachers in 60 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas in Uttar Pradesh in FY2024-25

TIL Desk Lucknow(UP):👉In September 2024, in partnership with the Basic Education Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Khan Academy launched India’s first Khanmigo pilot, Khan Academy’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered teacher assistant and personal tutor, in KGBV schools. In 60 KGBVs across 7 districts, math teachers have had the opportunity to use Khanmigo in Hindi and the power of GenAI to strengthen their teaching-learning process.

Since June 2021, Uttar Pradesh’s Basic Education Department and Khan Academy have been working together to strengthen math and science learning outcomes in the state. The program started in the 746 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs)—residential schools for girls from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, in the state. Since 2021, more than 2,000 teachers have been trained to integrate Khan Academy into their classrooms for math and science, impacting over 1 lakh girls. For these students, the program has been groundbreaking—not just igniting a passion for learning, but shifting mindsets. The encouraging results have prompted the expansion of this partnership to include schools under the Madhyamik Education Department, other Parishidya schools with ICT infrastructure, and more recently, Khanmigo.

Through the Khanmigo pilot in these 60 KGBVs, the objective has been to foster a culture of excellence and innovation in math education by equipping teachers to support their students. To enable teachers to effectively integrate AI into their teaching-learning process, Khan Academy conducted training for these teachers (in-person and online) as well as provided continuous support to them.

Teachers in these schools have been using Khanmigo’s teacher assistance tools in Hindi to strengthen their classroom teaching by creating high-quality lesson plans, enabling rigorous practice on any topic by generating questions as per their needs, facilitating assessments of students, providing personalised instruction and support through reviewing their classroom and student’s performance, and for many more purposes.

● Strengthening their classroom instruction and delivery by creating their lesson plans, engaging hooks and introducing hands-on and practical classroom experiences

● Generating assessments to serve various use cases including summative monthly exams, quizzes, preparing for scholarship examinations

● Creating questions for additional practice on specific topics such as schoolwork and homework

● Reviewing their students’ performance and using insights to celebrate high-performing students, and provide targeted support to slow learners

● For non-academic purposes including creating school roster, poems and skits for various events and celebrations in school

Based on the learnings of the program in KGBVs, Khan Academy has hosted open-for-all sessions for teachers in the state to provide Khanmigo. Currently, more than 1,200 teachers across UP have enrolled to have Khanmigo and leverage it to strengthen their teaching-learning process.

Khanmigo is now being extended for free to all teachers in India, in English and Hindi. Teachers will be able to find online resources on how to leverage Khanmigo for free on Khan Academy’s YouTube channel and its web platform.

Lauding the Khan Academy initiative, Sandeep Singh, Minister, Basic Education, Uttar Pradesh, expressed his excitement about the ongoing pilot project. During the event, Sandeep Singh spoke about the Government of Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to driving innovation in education. He went on to state “In today’s era, AI-powered learning is essential, and we are happy to collaborate with Khan Academy and its AI assistant, Khanmigo, to bring this vision to life.” He went on to conclude that as one of the first states to pilot Khanmigo, Uttar Pradesh has already witnessed positive impacts on learning outcomes and looks forward to sustained progress in the long run.

Kanchan Verma, Director General of School Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh during the event spoke about the Khan Academy India’s long association with Kasturba Gandhi Ballika Vidyalayas in the state, and based on the encouraging results, the state’s decision to expand the program to Madhyamik schools. She went on to state that the vision of the Hon Prime Minister, Hon Chief Minister, and Hon Minister is that the future of the country is in STEM and technology, and it is critical to generate interest among students in math and science. She emphasized the importance for students to be aware of technology, and be able to engage and use technology.

Commenting on this development, Swati Vasudevan, MD, Khan Academy India, said, “It is our privilege to support the Government of Uttar Pradesh in enhancing the quality of education in the state and to witness the remarkable transformation that is being driven in the state. The launch of the first Khanmigo pilot in India —in Hindi and with government school teachers—is a significant milestone. It is truly inspiring to see how these teachers embraced technology and AI, demonstrating its transformative potential in education. We have learned immensely from them; they are the trailblazers, paving the way for AI’s role in shaping the future of learning in the country.”
