Special on World Water Day (22nd March): From Crisis to Conservation: SUEZ India’s Commitment to Water Security

TIL Desk Lucknow:👉World Water Day is observed every year on March 22 to highlight the importance of freshwater and promote sustainable water management. Water is the foundation of life, yet its availability is under severe stress. Over-extraction of groundwater, inefficient usage, and pollution have pushed many regions to the brink of crisis. Nearly 600 million Indians face high to extreme water stress, and by 2050, India’s per capita water availability is projected to drop to 1,140 cubic meters—nearing absolute water scarcity.

Rasmi Ranjan Ray, CEO of SUEZ India, emphasized the urgent need for collective action: “Water security is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. As a company committed to sustainability, SUEZ India is deploying innovative technologies and strengthening partnerships to enable communities to access clean water. We urge every stakeholder—from individuals to industries—to take responsibility and help preserve this invaluable resource for future generations.”

Improper waste disposal also severely impacts city drainage systems. Dumping plastic, polythene, and solid waste into sewers leads to environmental damage, frequent blockages, increased maintenance costs, and poses serious health risks such as cholera, and dysentery. The poisonous hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S), released from damaged sewer infrastructure, is an additional threat. Lucknow residents are encouraged to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, report sewer issues promptly, and support initiatives like rainwater harvesting to improve water quality and ensure effective wastewater management.

With Lucknow’s growing population, upgrading the sewerage system as per the future master plan is crucial. This will prevent overflows, reduce pollution risks, and ensure effective wastewater treatment. Modernizing infrastructure with advanced sewage treatment plants (STPs) will enhance sustainability, reduce flooding, and support initiatives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Community-driven initiatives such as local clean-up drives and awareness programs are equally vital in protecting water resources. As a global leader in water and waste management, SUEZ India is pioneering sustainable solutions to address the country’s water crisis.

Public participation is critical in water conservation. “Every drop saved counts,” Ranjan noted. “Water conservation is not just the responsibility of governments or industries—it requires a collective effort from every individual.” Simple yet impactful measures such as fixing leaks, turning off taps when not in use, using water-efficient appliances, and properly disposing of waste can make a significant difference. Installing rainwater harvesting systems and recycling treated wastewater for non-potable purposes can also contribute to sustainable water management.

Highlighting SUEZ India’s solutions, Ranjan stated, “At SUEZ India, we develop cutting-edge technologies to enhance water security. Our AI-driven smart water management systems optimize distribution and minimize losses. Decentralized wastewater treatment enables local-level recycling, while desalination and reuse technologies provide alternative freshwater sources for water-stressed regions.”

On World Water Day, SUEZ India is reinforcing its commitment to water conservation by administering an oath to its employees. They will pledge to adopt at least one water-saving habit, such as fixing leaks, using a bucket while bathing, turning off taps while washing, watering plants during cooler hours, collecting rainwater, using reusable products, and repurposing rejected RO water. Additionally, as part of the initiative, SUEZ will host a water conservation session led by an expert from the Bio Environmental Trust based out of Bangalore to raise awareness among its employees. By integrating these small but meaningful practices, SUEZ India aims to foster a culture of water conservation within its workforce and beyond.
