Cameron announces resignation, says new PM should steer UK

TIL Desk/World/London-Prime Minister David Cameron today announced his resignation following the UK’s vote to leave the EU, saying a new Prime Minister should be in place by October as it would not be right for him to try to be “the captain that steers the country” to its next destination.

“We must now prepare for a negotiation with the European Union…The country requires fresh leadership to take this forward. While it is important that I stay on to steady the ship, I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination,” said Cameron, who led a spirited campaign for the Remain side.

WHAT IS BREXIT?

Brexit is an abbreviation of “British exit”, which refers to the June 23, 2016 referendum by British voters to exit the European Union. The referendum roiled global markets, including currencies, causing the British pound to fall to its lowest level in decades. Prime Minister David Cameron, who supported the UK remaining in the EU announced he would step down in October.
