Lt Shashank Tiwari made the ultimate sacrifice of his life in the line of duty while saving the life of his Army buddy. Lt Tiwari was part of a route opening team that started from Bichhu to Chu Junction in Sikkim on 22 May, 2025. While undertaking the task, Buddy of Lt Tiwari accidentally slipped and fell in adjacent fast flowing stream.
With utter disregard to his own personal safety, Lt. Tiwari heroically jumped into the stream and saved his buddy’s life, who escaped with minor injuries. However, Lt. Tiwari was unable to pull himself out of the fast flowing current and was swept away.
His mortal remains were brought to Ayodhya on 23 May, 2025. On 24 May, senior officers and personnel of the Indian Army, members of civil administration and local residents gathered at his village in Ayodhya to pay tributes to Lt. Tiwari’s valour and sacrifice and pay condolences to the grieving family.
Indian Army and Surya Command honours the courage and camaraderie displayed by the brave officer who very rightly stands by the Chetwood motto of “The Safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time. The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time. ”
23-year-old Lt Shashank Tiwari was commissioned into the 1st Battalion Sikkim Scouts on 14 Dec 2024.
